NASSAU COUNCIL OF CHAMBERS ELECTS E. CHRISTOPHER MURRAY PRESIDENT

The Chamber Launches Exciting Merchant Card Program

2008-2009 Community Guide Closes July 31

Village Overview

This historic building was completed in 1883 as part of an elaborate memorial to A.T. Stewart by his wife Cornelia. With over 500 rooms it stands like a fortress in a 40-acre site on Stewart Avenue. In its day, St. Paul’s was considered one of the finest buildings of its kind in the world. Exclusively for boys, it served as a military school for its first ten years, however, together with its sister school of St. Mary’s (for girls) they soon became one of the finer prep schools in the Northeast. Both schools began in the Fall of 1877 in houses supplied by Mrs. Stewart until their buildings were finished.

After 114 years of graduations, St. Paul’s (and St. Mary’s) closed their doors and now they face an uncertain future.
With 22,000 residents, 1,100 businesses and over 3 million square feet of commercial real estate, the Village of Garden City covers almost five square miles in the center of Nassau County.

Founded in 1869 by Alexander T. Stewart, “The Merchant Prince of Broadway,” Garden City was one of the first planned communities in the United States. This charming community, with its tree-lined streets, gracious homes and thriving business district, has long been one of Long Island’s most desirable municipalities in which to live and work with property values exceeding the Long Island average.

The gateway to Garden City’s residential and business community is Franklin Avenue. This dynamic boulevard is Long Island’s headquarters for international financial service companies, leading law firms and major national retailers. These businesses plus the specialty shops and fine restaurants located on both Franklin Avenue and intersecting Seventh Street combined with the many extra municipal services available to residents and visitors alike, IE: ample free parking, a village police force and fire department plus award winning public landscaping - all make Garden City a prosperous, beautiful and safe place for business, leisure and living. Business and recreational travelers from around the world can relax and conduct business in comfort at the four-star, five-diamond, 280-room Garden City Hotel, a cornerstone of the vitality and prosperity of the community.

Conveniently located 1.5 miles from intersecting parkways and only a 40-minute drive from Manhattan, Garden City is served by a total of five LIRR railroad stations. The village is just a half-hour drive to JFK and LaGuardia airports and a 45-minute drive to Long Island’s Islip-MacArthur Airport.

Renowned for its top-ranked public school systems (first out of 649 in a study conducted at State University at Albany). In May 2006, Garden City was designated a "Gold Medal School District" ranking in the top 16% of all school districts nationally. Garden City is home to Adelphi University, three private schools, nine nursery schools and day care centers. It also has a modern, internet-connected public library, residents' playgrounds, tennis courts, swimming pool complex, three private golf courses and twelve houses of worship.
