Together with St. Paul’s, St. Mary’s and the Bishop’s House, the Cathedral of the Incarnation was built by Cornelia Stewart as a memorial to her late husband, A.T. Stewart. Completed in 1885, it is a classic example of Gothic Architecture. When first built, it was the tallest structure on Long Island and its 200+ foot tower could be seen by sailors on the East River in New York. Today, in its 40-acre park-like setting, the Cathedral looks very much as it did when first completed. The 13 bells in the tower are the same ones Cornelia Stewart bought at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition in 1876. They represent the first 13 states and are replicas of the Liberty Bell.
